Summary

A stickily hot New York summer is cooly observed in this dazzling debut novel。

It's the summer of 2013, and while New York City swelters Isa and Gala scrape and hustle By day they sell clothes in a market stall, pinching pennies for their Bed-Stuy sublet and bodega lunches。 By night, they weave from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side among a rotating cast of artists, academics and bad-mannered grifters。 Desires aren't for denying, not this season。 But as money gets sparse and circumstances grow precarious, the pair struggle to convert social capital into something more tangible。

In the last bitter blush of capitalism, when the only agency afforded to you is in the image you present to the world, getting that presentation sharp and shining can feel like the most important thing in the world。 Happy Hour is a novel about getting by and looking grand in a system that wants you to do neither。

i liked this far more than i expected! it's effervescent。 it's a snapshot。 it's a moment, and isa knows that those don't last very long。 maybe "shallow," but you're only hot and 21 once and you never will be again and i commend isa and gala for realizing that before most of us do。 it's like that classic sofia coppola quote that girls like me (and i like to think, isa and gala) adore: "。。。 I think you can be substantial and still be interested in frivolity。"it reminded me of my first summer livin i liked this far more than i expected! it's effervescent。 it's a snapshot。 it's a moment, and isa knows that those don't last very long。 maybe "shallow," but you're only hot and 21 once and you never will be again and i commend isa and gala for realizing that before most of us do。 it's like that classic sofia coppola quote that girls like me (and i like to think, isa and gala) adore: "。。。 I think you can be substantial and still be interested in frivolity。"it reminded me of my first summer living away from home at 18, eating apples for lunch, scrounging change from around the coop i was living in to buy a beer, dosing mushrooms on a tuesday afternoon because why not。 just fucking around with my feral friend (who might even be reading this review now)。 isa and gala do this much more glamorously, but the spirit is there。there's a review here that's like "why weren't they saving and eating rice and beans!!! I read this right after reading Exciting Times by Dolan, and at the beginning I thought whether nowadays we can only read about female protagonists who are completely self-centered and insufferable, blasées of the life they have to live。 I was about to throw the book out of the window but I kept reading and actually it gets better? As in, she starts to have a bit more depth of character and becomes a bit more interesting to read about。 She even throws in a couple of interesting thoughts that wer I read this right after reading Exciting Times by Dolan, and at the beginning I thought whether nowadays we can only read about female protagonists who are completely self-centered and insufferable, blasées of the life they have to live。 I was about to throw the book out of the window but I kept reading and actually it gets better? a spectacular girl who i will think about continuously! i think the line about never looking up at or down at a spouse/partner/friend will forever live in my mind and might be my new measure of love。 there was so much wisdom and the whole concept of being a foreigner was very comforting to me。 the no plot, just vibes is a perfect description of my time in spain and i love a relatable book。 cheers to marlowe for making a perfect and beautiful story!

brunella

charming little novel。 more books about women having a good time!

Isa is a girlboss fr

Not a page turner, but Isa is a beautiful character and I loved reading from her perspective。

I really wanted to love this book but I found the main character pretentious and her best friend was insufferable。 I normally love books with no plot, but literally nothing of note happened in this book。 The jumping between dates felt shallow and pointless。

Probably one of the most vapid, insipid and boring books I have read。 Almost gave up, but managed to read til the end。 A book about nothing, with annoying millenial female characters in NYC in 2013。 Just didn't buy any of it。 Plain silly。 Probably one of the most vapid, insipid and boring books I have read。 Almost gave up, but managed to read til the end。 A book about nothing, with annoying millenial female characters in NYC in 2013。 Just didn't buy any of it。 Plain silly。 。。。more

fun, evocative, personal。 feels apt that i finished it at a bar with a cocktail in hand。 i really enjoyed the prose and the journey of the book

Very “slice of life” - novel written in the format of a diary

I wish I’d started this book earlier in the summer because I know I would’ve finished it in 2 days。 Based off what I heard on Tik Tok, I didn’t have high expectations for this one in terms of seriousness, but I was SO pleasantly surprised by the poignancy of the narrator。 Like damn!! The author is almost giving Sally Rooney?? But, like, slightly less pretentious (sorry Sally) and a lot more chaotic and scrappy。 Also, female friendship。 It’s the best kind of relationship to read about。

I loved this。 It has that escapist fantasy energy to it, where Isa and Gala are basically floating through life through sheer force of charisma, youth and beauty。 They barely work and constantly go out, all the while judging others and enjoying all that the city has to offer。 Isa has such a strong voice throughout, and I loved all being in her head。

Very slow in the beginning, but the second half i really loved。 If we had seen more of the main character's personality in the first half it would have been 5 stars。 Very slow in the beginning, but the second half i really loved。 If we had seen more of the main character's personality in the first half it would have been 5 stars。 。。。more

(3。5) I don't really know how I feel about the writing here, or the overall impact of this book, but I did do a hell of a lot of dog earing in my library copy。 Isa is a compelling as hell narrator, a keen observer of the frivolity of those around her and yet grappling with the fact that her worth is derived from how entertaining she can be。 There's a staggering amount of aide characters that flit in and out of the picture, but at the center is this girl yearning to be taken seriously in the New (3。5) I don't really know how I feel about the writing here, or the overall impact of this book, but I did do a hell of a lot of dog earing in my library copy。 Isa is a compelling as hell narrator, a keen observer of the frivolity of those around her and yet grappling with the fact that her worth is derived from how entertaining she can be。 There's a staggering amount of aide characters that flit in and out of the picture, but at the center is this girl yearning to be taken seriously in the New York party scene。 The author makes some interesting commentary on Youth, but I struggled with the latter third of it immensely and so am unsure how to feel。 。。。more

3。5First of all, this is basically contemporary female-narrated J。D。 Salinger??? Couldn't get that thought out of my head as I was reading itI think I would have really, really liked this book at a different juncture in my life。 It has many good qualities, and the ambience developed by the author is top-notch (I also was in NYC for a little while as a 21-year-old and related viscerally to some of these girls' experiences)。 However, my being temporarily unemployed at my parents' place and not kno 3。5First of all, this is basically contemporary female-narrated J。D。 Salinger??? (3。5) it has no plot and its repetitive at points but all in all its a good book and id love to read more from this author in the future

Frivolous & fun in a way that feels borderline political。 “Beach read” and “chick lit” that’s self-aware of how it’s being perceived。 Very very clever。 I want to be this author’s friend。 Would recommend!

Claire

A great romp! A must read for a summer in the city。

Katelyn

I loved this。 It’s one of those epistolary novels were so much happens but there isn’t really a story? We get these rich flashes of color and life and opulence and it makes it so hard to put down。 The characters were pretentious and annoying in the best way。 They’re so much。 It’s really endearing。 Granados writes in a way that is so relatable, it’s like a much more eloquent and glamorous extension of my own mind。

Eunice Bao

missed new york so much i started to like this book。

3。5 ⭐️ rounded up! It took me a second to get into this book because the writing style is pretty unique, but i ended up very absorbed into Isa’s world。 This book reads like her diary with less of a plot and more like stories of her and Gala’s various adventures in NYC。 I really enjoyed her adventures and the ways in which Isa perceived the world。 It was a quick read with a super compelling narrator。
